On 30 March 2025, Godalming Choral Society gave a rousing performance of Elijah by Felix Mendelssohn in the magnificent setting of Charterhouse Chapel. Under the assured baton of conductor George de Voil, the choir, orchestra, and soloists brought to life one of the greatest works in the choral-orchestral canon.
The concert, blessed with spring sunshine that warmed even the austere grandeur of the Memorial Chapel, captured the full drama of Elijah’s story—from moments of intense conflict and divine intervention to passages of serene devotion. With its soaring choruses and emotive arias, the performance showcased the power and precision of GCS’s choral sound, earning a spontaneous standing ovation from the audience.
George praised the choir’s stamina, secure tuning, and expressive energy, which held their own against a powerful orchestra and organ. Several soloists remarked on the choir’s musicality and commitment, which formed the backbone of the evening’s success.
Special thanks were extended to the many who made the performance possible—from the trustees and organisers who took on the challenge of a new venue, to those who provided financial support to secure top-tier soloists. A collaborative partnership with Greyfriars added a vibrant sense of community and celebration to the event.
As George noted, Elijah was a “tremendous piece to bring to life” and the evening "fizzed with energy." With the promise of Mozart’s Great Mass in C Minor next term, the society looks forward to another ambitious and uplifting musical journey.
